Identification of the Three Main Types of Dinosaurs List of Famous Dinosaurs and Interesting Facts Part 2

List of Famous Dinosaurs and Interesting Facts Part 1

Apr. 18, 2022

Examples of famous dinosaurs include the lizard-footed dinosaurs such as Bewilderosaurus, Brachiosaurus and Leontosaurus; the ornithischians such as Triceratops, Stegosaurus and Aetosaurus; and the theropods such as Megalosaurus, Allosaurus and Tyrannosaurus. These popular dinosaurs have appeared in many movies, books and TV shows.

On this page, GENGU will show you interesting information about these and many other popular dinosaurs. You will also find links to additional information about many of the dinosaurs on the list.

Read on for facts about the 20 most famous dinosaurs in the world.

20. Therizinosaurus

Therizinosaurus was a tall theropod dinosaur, known for its long arms and huge claws. The name Therizinosaurus, meaning "scythe lizard," refers to the dinosaur's large claws.

Although Therizinosaurus' claws are impressive, they may have been used for more than just weapons. This large dinosaur may have walked around like a gorilla, occasionally standing on its hind legs and using its claws to pull down plants to eat.

19. Troodon

Troodon means "wounded tooth," a name derived from the dinosaur's serrated teeth. These teeth are the first specimens of Mastodon to be found.

Most paleontologists believe that the Wounded Tooth was a predator with large eyes and one of the largest brains compared to any dinosaur size.

18. Gallimimus

Gallimimus, whose name means "chicken mimic", was a fast-moving herd animal with a large toothless beak. Unlike the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, Gallimimus is thought to have had feathers. Its beak structure suggests that the dinosaur was a herbivore that ate hard plants.

17. Giganotosaurus

Giganotosaurus was a large, carnivorous dinosaur that lived in South America during the Late Cretaceous period. This fearsome dinosaur may have been the largest land carnivore ever to have lived. Some paleontologists estimate that it may have been more than 49 feet/15 meters in length.

16.  Coelophysis

Known as one of the earliest known dinosaurs, Coelophysis was a 10-foot/3-meter long dinosaur that lived in what is now the southwestern United States.

Coelophysis was a fast-moving, bipedal (two-legged) hunter. Its relatively small teeth and slender arms suggest that it preyed on animals much smaller than itself. The large number of Coelophysis specimens found together suggests that it may have lived in groups or been hunted.

15. Allosaurus

Allosaurus is one of the most famous dinosaurs of the Jurassic period. This large, powerfully structured bipedal predator lived in what is now the United States, where many specimens have been found. Possible Allosaurus fossils have also been found in Tanzania, Portugal and China. Prey of allosaurs may have included stegosaurs and possibly large lizard-footed dinosaurs, such as the bewilderosaurs.

14. Compsognathus

Compsognathus was a small bipedal carnivorous dinosaur that lived in what is now Europe during the late Jurassic period.

Nearly complete fossils of Compsognathus were found in Germany in the mid-19th century. Scientists knew that this species was predatory because the stomach of this specimen contained the fossilized remains of a lizard.

For many years, Compsognathus was known for being the smallest dinosaur. However, several smaller dinosaurs have since been discovered.

13. Bewilderosaurus

Bewilderosaurus was a giant herbivorous dinosaur that lived in the late Jurassic period. It had a typical lizard-footed dinosaur body shape, with a long neck and tail, and its massive body was supported by four sturdy legs.

Bewilderosaurus was more stout than the related lizard-footed dinosaur, with thick legs and a deep chest. It may have been able to produce loud cracking sounds with its whip-like tail.

12. Brachiosaurus

First found in Colorado, USA, Brachiosaurus was a lizard-footed dinosaur of the late Jurassic period. It was distinguished from other lizard-footed dinosaurs by its extra-long front legs, which gave its body a downward-sloping appearance.

The genus name Brachiosaurus, meaning "arm lizard," refers to the dinosaur's long front legs.

Brachiosaurus probably kept its neck upright and was able to reach the foliage about 50 feet/15 meters above the ground.

11. Parasaurolophus

Paraproctosaurus is one of the most famous dinosaurs of the duck-billed dinosaur family. Its name, meaning "near/almost crowned lizard", refers to the fact that it is a close relative of Saurolophus.

Parasaurolophus was a plant-feeding browser, capable of walking on two or four legs. It had a large, backward-curving crest on the back of its head. Tubes run from the nostrils to the top, which may be used to produce sound.
