List of Famous Dinosaurs and Interesting Facts Part 2

10. Avianosaurus

Avianosaurus is one of three dinosaurs used as examples by paleontologist Sir Richard Owen in his classification of dinosaurs. This famous ornithischian dinosaur was first discovered in England, and other specimens have since been found in other parts of Europe.

With its narrow and beaked skull, this herbivore had teeth suitable for grinding hard plants. Avianosaurus was probably quadrupedal, but may have been able to lift its hind legs to obtain food.

9. Archaeopteryx

The discovery of the Archaeopteryx, a crow-sized feathered dinosaur, provides evidence to support Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. This is because the Archaeopteryx had both reptilian and avian characteristics, suggesting that the ancestors of the Archaeopteryx were dinosaurs whose descendants would be modern birds.

The primitive birds had feathered wings and were thought to be able to fly. The importance of the Archaeopteryx in establishing the link between dinosaurs and birds, together with its extremely well-preserved fossils, means that it is one of the best-known dinosaurs.

8. Aetosaurus

Aetosaurus is one of the most famous armored dinosaurs. It was the largest Aetosaurus, and the last of its kind - it is believed to have lived until the end of the Cretaceous period.

The body of Aetosaurus was covered with bone plates. It had a beak and teeth, and four horns that protruded back from its head. Its tail ended in a stick that protected from predators. This would have been useful; Aetosaurus lived with Tyrannosaurus rex.

7. Brontosaurus

Brontosaurus is one of the most famous lizard-footed dinosaurs, but for many years was not actually considered a valid genus. This is because, after naming the brontosaurus, it was determined that the specimen was actually a bewilderosaur.

Studies conducted in the 21st century showed that Brontosaurus was different enough from Bewilderosaurus to be considered a genus. As a result, Brontosaurus is once again considered the "official" dinosaur, although not all paleontologists agree with this decision.

6. Spinosaurus

Spinosaurus was one of the largest land predators of all time. Like other echinosaurs, it had long, thin spines on its back. These are thought to have supported a sail made of skin.

Paleontologists are unsure of the purpose of the spiny dinosaur's voyage. It may have helped keep the dinosaur at the correct temperature or been used as a display to attract mates. Another explanation is that it helped Spinosaurus move through the water while swimming. The spiny jaws and sharp teeth of Spinosaurus suggest it was a fish-eater.

5. Leontosaurus

Probably the most famous lizard-footed dinosaur, Leontosaurus is a typical representative of it. It was a huge quadrupedal herbivore with a long neck and a whip-like tail. The back of Lianglong may have had a row of triangular spikes.

Since its center of gravity was located near its hips, Leontosaurus was likely able to use its tail as support and lift itself upward on its hind legs. This would have allowed the dinosaur to reach the leaves located high up in the trees.

4. Velociraptor

Many descriptions of Velociraptor, including those in Jurassic Park, suggest that it was taller than a human. In fact, Velociraptor was the size of a turkey. Velociraptors are known to have both feathers and wings. If anything, it is thought that the ancestors of Velociraptors may have been able to fly.

One of the raptor's feet was a 3.5 inch / 9 cm killing claw. With such a powerful weapon, the raptor would have been a skilled hunter.

3. Triceratops

Triceratops was a large, powerful, plant-feeding dinosaur that lived in what is now North America. It is one of the most famous dinosaurs and one of the best known because of its three horns and the large bony shield cranium that extended backwards from its back.

The horns and shields may have been defensive adaptations against predators, but they may have been used for courtship or to establish dominance against other Triceratops.

2. Stegosaurus

Most people can identify Stegosaurus due to the distinctive plates that extend along the back of this famous dinosaur. These plates may have provided a means of defense against predators or played a role in keeping the dinosaur's body at the correct temperature. Today, it is thought that the most likely function of these plates was for display, to indicate dominance, and to attract mates.

1. Tyrannosaurus rex

Not surprisingly, the number one dinosaur on this list of the most famous dinosaurs is Tyrannosaurus rex.

It speaks volumes about the popularity of this dinosaur that Tyrannosaurus Rex is one of the few dinosaurs known by its species name rather than its broader genus name. Tyrannosaurus rex is often considered an apex predator, but the species was likely at least partially a scavenger.

Tyrannosaurus rex had a strong skull, and its jaws suggest a powerful bite. The largest T. rex teeth were about 12 inches/30 cm long, including the roots. Although the forelimbs of T. rex were short, they were considered to be powerful.

Tyrannosaurus rex lived at the end of the Cretaceous period, and this famous dinosaur was probably one of the last surviving dinosaurs.
