The 6 Best Dinosaur Museums in the World

Jan. 05, 2023

Humans have long been fascinated by dinosaurs. First appearing during the Triassic period between 243 and 233 million years ago, dinosaurs existed in various shapes and sizes for about 165 million years before becoming extinct about 65 million years ago. Today, inlaid dinosaur skeletons, fossils and exhibits are popular in museums around the world, and dinosaurs have become an enduring part of popular culture.

These are our picks for the 6 best dinosaur museums in the world.

1. Zigong Dinosaur Museum

Opened in 1987 due to the region's mild climate, the Zigong Dinosaur Museum is located on a site where more than 100 dinosaur fossils have been found, including 30 complete or nearly complete skeletons. Spread over three floors and spanning more than 700,000 feet, the museum contains notable exhibits from the Jurassic period, as well as glimpses of the Dashanpu fossil excavation site itself. The attraction boasts 18 complete skeletons as well as footprints, fossilized skin and other prehistoric finds.

2. Berlin Museum of Natural Sciences

Berlin's Natural History Museum houses a collection of bones unearthed in the 20th century, mainly in Tanzania, then a German East African colony. The most famous exhibit is undoubtedly the 41-foot-long Brachiosaurus, the tallest dinosaur on display in the world and still one of the world's most important paleontological discoveries.

3. Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C.

The Smithsonian is known for its diverse collection of materials and for its wide variety of fossils and dinosaur-related exhibits. The exhibit contains 700 exotic fossil specimens, with special highlights including a Tyrannosaurus rex, a leptosaurus, an Alaskan palm tree and a mammoth.

4. Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History in Atlanta showcases some of the world's most important prehistoric finds unearthed in Patagonia. A popular attraction is the veritable megalosaur, which approaches the size of the fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex, and the Argentinosaurus, a 100-ton lizard-footed dinosaur.

5. National Dinosaur Museum, Canberra

The National Dinosaur Museum in Canberra was established in 1993 and has the largest permanent collection of dinosaur fossils in Australia. It hosts guided tours of many exhibits, with highlights including dinosaur skulls, skeletons, murals and even electronic animated displays. Outside, a garden filled with dinosaur sculptures - including a 65-foot-tall dinosaur named Stan - helps attract about 200,000 people a year.

6. Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels

Founded in 1846, this museum in Brussels has the largest dinosaur gallery in the world, with highlights including the discovery of 30 iguanas in a Belgian coal mine, the second dinosaur to be classified in the 1800s. Another highlight included a plesiosaur named Ben and a replica of a Tyrannosaurus rex named Stan. An unusual but popular feature is the well-preserved fossilized feathered dinosaur.
