The Mystery And Interesting History of Pterodactyls

May. 06, 2022

Pterodactyl is the common name for pterosaurs, an extinct species of winged reptile. There is a genus of pterosaurs called Pteranodon - that's where the word "pterosaur" comes from - but not all pterosaurs belong to this genus.

Is a pterosaur a bird, a dinosaur, or a mammal? Answer: None of the above! Because they flew and their forelimbs extended to the sides, they were not dinosaurs. Instead, they are distant dinosaur cousins.

Pterosaurs lived from the late Triassic to the end of the Cretaceous and became extinct along with the dinosaurs. Pterosaurs were carnivores, feeding mainly on fish and small animals. Many had hooked claws and sharp teeth used to catch their prey.

Pterosaurs evolved into dozens of separate species. Some were as large as F-16 fighter planes and some were as small as paper airplanes.

They were also the first animals, after insects, to evolve powered flight. This means that instead of just jumping into the air or gliding, they flapped their wings to generate lift.

However, not all pterosaurs could fly. Pterodactyls flew using wings formed by tough membranes that extended along their bodies to their slender ring fingers.

Like birds, the bones of pterosaurs were light and hollow. Pterosaur bones survived as fossils only when their bodies rested in a very protected environment. Most pterosaur remains come from species that lived near the ocean or sea.

Many pterodactyl fossils are preserved in Bavaria, Germany. During the Jurassic period, the area was a swampy wetland on the edge of an ancient ocean. The creatures that washed into the wetlands were buried in the mud. This mud slowly hardened into limestone and the bones became fossils.

Since the Güvengian era, the fossil record has revealed more about these extinct reptiles, which lived from about 220 million to 66 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period, disappearing at the same time as the large dinosaurs in a mass extinction event.

Nonetheless, although pterosaurs may often be grouped with dinosaurs in children's picture books, they were not dinosaurs. The scientific consensus today is that pterosaurs were more closely related to dinosaurs, which descended from birds than from any other group, including crocodiles, which followed closely behind. It is also clear that pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to fly - a remarkable feat. Tiny invertebrates have long flown into the sky, but no insect as large as a tetrapod vertebrate has ever attempted such a thing.

They are some of the most amazing creatures that have ever lived! They made the first attempt to conquer the air among vertebrates - they were the first to develop powered flight. That said, the type of sustained flight later evolved independently in birds and bats.

Although pterodactyls are not dinosaurs, they still have much in common with other prehistoric predators, and we still know a lot about them. The rarity of fossils leaves a major gap in our understanding of pterosaurs. How did they evolve to fly? Why did they disappear? What did they really look like? Maybe one day you will help find the answers to these questions! You can visit the GENGU website, drop us a line in the comments section, and we'll email you back.
